Adamthwaite family - generation 3:

my Great Grandparents

James Adamthwaite was born on 9 July 1846 in Market Brough, Westmorland and christened 13 Sep 1846.  His parents were William Adamthwaite, tailor and Sarah (formerly Mason).  In the 1851 census, James was living with his parents in Brough, and in 1861 he was a farm servant in nearby Kaber, working for farmer Thomas Waugh.

 

At some point before 1866, James travelled to Auckland, County Durham where he married Ann Carter (also from Bough).

 

The couple were married on 1 dec 1866 in Auckland: James was aged 20 years, a coke fitter of Crook, son of William Adamthwaite, taolor (Deceased).  Ann was aged 19 years, also of Crook, and the daughter of Robert Carter, labourer, deceased (source Marriage Certificate).

There had been an influx of families from Westmorland to Durham in the years preceding the 1871 census – including many from Brough to Crook and Billy Row.  Amongst them were James’ brothers George and William and his grandfather John, and Ann’s brother James.

 

In the 1881 census, the family were living at 38 Model Place, Darlington, Durham :

In the 1891 census, the family were living at 86 Greenfield St, Crook, Co Durham:

In 1901 census, the Adamthwaite family were living at The Holmes, Crook and Billy Row, Co Durham :

In the 1939 Register, there were still Adamthwaites living in Crook - John Thomas and his family were at 4 Arthur st and Richard and his family were at 7 The Holmes.

James Adamthwaite died on 11 Feb 1912 at Arthur Street, Crook; he was aged 65 years and is occupation was coalminer (hewer).  The cause of death was cardiac failure, 21 days certified by Wm O Taylor MB.  The death was reported by T Adamthwaite, son, of Gilroy Square, Crook, present at the death (source Death Certificate.  James was buried in Crook Cemetery on 14 Feb 1912.

Ann was born on 14 April 1847 in Market Brough.  She was the daughter of Robert Carter, labourer and Mary (formerly Dobson) (source Birth Certificate).

 

Ann Adamthwaite died aged 54 on 24 oct 1901 at The Holmes, Crook.  She was described as the wife of James Adamthwaite, coalminer and the cause of death was Erysipelas, 8 days, certified by K Chapel, MB.  The death was reported by J Adamthwaite, widower of deceased, present at death (source Death Certificate) Mary Isabella often told her own children that she had had to care for her younger brothers and sister after her mother’s death.

 

Known children of James and Ann Adamthwaite:

 

George William, born Crook in 1867.  In 1896 he married Mary Ann Mason and in the 1901 census he was a coalminer living in Auckland.

 

 

James, born Westmorland about 1870 . This James died in 1871 aged 1 year

 

 

Sarah Ann, born Crook in 1872 – Sarah Ann Adamthwaite died aged 22  and was buried on 26 Sep 1894 in Crook Cemetery.

 

 

James, born Crook in 1875.  In 1897 he married Isabella Cassell and in the 1901 census was living in Crook, working as a coalminer.  James and Isabella are known to have had seven children: Elizabeth Ann (b. 1898); Ernest (b. 1901) was married to Beatrice May Reid in 1923 and they are grandparents of Donna; Isabella (1911 – 1911); Hilda (b.1913);James (1915-1915); Florrie (b. 1918); and James H (b. 1923).  James died in 1945.

John Thomas, born on 11 jan 1882 at Frosterley Stanhope (source copy of original birth certificate from JB) –  he was a miner at Roddymoor Colliery.  He married Mary Jane Johns in 1906, and they had six children: Lilian  (1908-1989) married Fred and their family remained in Crook; John Thomas (1910-1998) married Nellie and they moved to Welwyn Garden City where he was a head gardener; James (b.1912) married Joyce and they moved to Colchester; Frederick (1915-1968) married Edith; Henrietta (b.1920) married Robert; and Edward (b. 1921)married Miriam – he was a coalminer and remained in Durham. Richard, born Howden le Wear in 1884. Richard was married to Elizabeth Jane Martin in 1907. The couple had seven children: Richard (1907-1977) married to Beatrice Eldred; Edith Jane (1911 -? ) married to Albert Buckingham; Mary Isabelle (Belle) (1913 - ?) married to Charles Abbis; Dora May (1915 – ?) married to Richard Stevens;  George William (1926 - ?) married to Margaret Gelson; Amelia (1931 - ?) married to Albert Waggot; and Elsie Moya, who died as a baby in 1918.  Richard was a miner and was a very good gardener and keen pigeon fancier who was very proud of his champion birds – he had photographs of his birds.  Richard died aged 80 and was buried in Crook Cemetery on 29 dec 1964.His grand-daughter remembers him as having a good sense of humour. (source MM) The photo below shows six of Richard Adamthwaite’s children: Mary Isabelle, George William, Edith Jane, (bride and groom Ann and Alan Whitaker), Dora May, Richard and Amelia. Richard’s daughters Dora May and Belle were living in London in the 1930s and were great friends of Mary and Moya Green. George William is Alan Adamthwaite’s father and Edith Jane is Moya Marley’s mother.

 

 

Elizabeth Hannah, born Crook in 1889 and died aged 15 – she was buried on 26 Jun 1904 in Crook Cemetery.

 

 

Frederick, born Shildon in 1892. Was a Private in WWI but was wounded and died of his injuries on 25 Jun 1915.  He is buried in Crook Cemetery.

 

 

Len Ward remembers Mary saying that James Adamthwaite was a good footballer who played for Crook – although I have never found any confirmation about James’ involvement in football, certainly his son, John Thomas was secretary of Crook Town Football Club in 1921 and toured with the club to Barcelona (source JB).  Alan Adamthwaite, who is descended from James and Ann’s eldest son George William Adamthwaite has written a book about  ‘Glory Days – the Golden Age of Bishop Auckland’ published on 1st September 2005, and more recently published two more volumes about his footballing ancestors
