Johnson/Dearl family - the first generation: parents
Annie Kathleen Johnson
Annie was born on 8 sept 1920 in Oxford, father William Johnson, mother Kathleen Johnson (formerly Dearl). When Anne was still a young child, the family moved to Wales, living at 25 Blodwen Street in Aberavon.
After leaving school, Anne went to London to train as a nurse at Homerton Hospital and she met John, then a young policeman, at a dance.
Anne and (Royston) John Mastel were married on 31 august 1940 in Neath. During the war, Anne worked as a nurse in Wales, but they lived most of their married life in London.
Following John's retirement, Anne and John moved down to Wales, where her brothers Tommy, Brian and Chris still lived with their families, and they bought a house in Nottage, Porthcawl, where they spent many happy years together. Anne was very active in the Women's Royal Voluntary Service - working for the Meals on Wheels service, on the Help desk at the Princess of Wales hospital in Bridgend and also at the residential home in Rest Bay.
Anne died on 27 November 2008 at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend and was cremated at Margam Crematorium where her ashes are interred alongside those of her husband John, who died ten years earlier.

This picture of Anne as a nurse was John’s favourite photo of her – he carried it in his wallet during the war and throughout his life.
